BJJ in Marie-Galante, Guadeloupe
Founded in September 2023 and affiliated with the Cercle, Gamma is the first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu club on Marie-Galante island.
Run by Noureddine Ajdid, a black belt student of Thibaut Olivier, the club offers self-defence, gi and no-gi classes following the Cercle’s shared teaching programme.
Various activities are organised throughout the year to introduce students of all levels to BJJ. Alongside regular classes, these include beach training, school introductions and demonstrations at local festivals.
We have many beginners as well as more experienced practitioners.
For the following season, a children’s section will open in September 2024 for ages 7 and over.
Our classes take place in the dojo of Capesterre’s Municipal Office of Culture and Sport.

The history of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu begins in 1904. The founding father of judo, Jigoro Kano, envoya l’un de ses plus talentueux élèves pour enseigner son art sur le continent américain : Mitsuo Maeda...
A champion. A strategy for worldwide expansion.
Maeda was born in 1878 in Aomori Prefecture. As a child, he already practised ju-jitsu at the Tenshin Shinyo school, where Jigoro Kano had previously studied. At 18, he joined the first great judo school, the Kodokan. He was a highly motivated fighter who gave opponents little chance, despite his small build: 1.65 m and 70 kg. He soon became the Kodokan’s most promising judoka.
Before the first BJJ classes in Marie-Galante… America
In 1904, at 26, Mitsuo Maeda received his 4th Dan and took the opportunity to travel to America. His demonstrations initially met with setbacks, and he had limited success teaching judo in the United States. He therefore accepted a challenge that violated the Kodokan’s moral code: a free fight against a practitioner of another discipline. He defeated the New York wrestler and collected the prize. This marked the start of his professional fighting career.
